The AAP promotes excellence in periodontal practice by offering members opportunities for continuing education and professional development and recognition.

Annual Meeting and Other Conferences

At the Annual Meeting, held in the fall, participants acquire new skills and techniques through continuing education opportunities, updates on current scientific research, and insight into the future of the profession. The meeting's educational and scientific programming focuses on both clinical topics and practice management issues. Opportunities to hear formally from the experts are balanced with time for informal discussions with colleagues. An exhibition showcases the latest products and services pertinent to the profession.

Journal of Periodontology (JOP)

First published in 1929, the Journal is the official scholarly publication of the Academy, presenting the latest advances in the science and practice of periodontal disease and related fields. Viewed as one of the most important benefits of membership, the Journal is sent each month to dues-paying AAP members and is available by paid subscriptions to nonmembers. Members and subscribers also have online access to a searchable database of full-text Journal articles from 1999 on.

Clinical Advances in Periodontics (CAP)

This quarterly online-only journal is dedicated to advancing clinical management of patients by translating scientific knowledge into practical therapy. Journal of Periodontology subscriptions include access to Clinical Advances in Periodontics.

Clinical and Scientific Papers

The Academy also publishes position, informational, and research papers on the etiology, pathogenesis, or treatment of periodontal diseases. New and updated papers are published in the Journal of Periodontology or available via resource libraries on AAP Connect.

In-Service Examination

The Academy develops and administers the annual In-Service Examination, which is offered to all students in postdoctoral periodontal programs in the United States and Canada. Members may access past In-Service Examinations online free of charge to help them assess and update their knowledge on an ongoing basis.

  • Download Past In-Service Exams - available from the In-Service Exam resource library on AAP Connect.

American Board of Periodontology Certification

The Academy sponsors the American Board of Periodontology (ABP), which evaluates standards of periodontic practice by examining the qualifications and competence of periodontists who voluntarily apply to the Board for certification as Diplomates. After successful completion of a written qualifying examination, a candidate will be considered Board Eligible for the next two full-year cycles of the Oral Examination. During this time the entire examination process must be completed unless an eligibility extension is granted.
