AAP Membership Categories, Privileges, and Dues

The AAP offers four membership categories for new members and three transfer categories for long-term members, based on professional qualifications, practice status, and residency.
Categories for New Members
If you are already a member and are eligible to transfer to Active, Associate, Student, International status, submit a Transfer Application.

Licensed to practice dentistry in the U.S. and member of the American Dental Association (ADA).

Qualified as a specialist in periodontics according to ADA requirement and limits practice to periodontics.

Qualified both as a periodontist and one or more other ADA recognized specialties and limits practice to these specialties.

Has successfully completed periodontal training in an accredited periodontal program in the United States.

Is primarily a researcher or educator in periodontics who limits practice to periodontics.

Life Active Member
Any Active member who:

Is 65 years or older and has been an Active member for 25 or more consecutive years.

Life (Voting) members as of 9/26/02 have been transferred to this category; they are exempt from dues and pay for a subscription to the Journal.

Life Active members who teach periodontics full-time as defined by their institution receive a 50% dues reduction based on Active member pricing. |
Retired Member
Any person who has been a dues paying member of the Academy for ten years or who is disabled, shall be eligible to be a Retired member upon complete retirement from the practice of dentistry. Members in the Life Non-Active category as of November 14, 2011, are grandfathered in the category without having paid dues for 10 years. |
