About the AAP

Membership  The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) is an 8,000-member association of dental professionals specializing in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting the gums and supporting structures of the teeth and in the placement and maintenance of dental implants. The current membership includes periodontists and general dentists from all 50 states as well as around the world.

Purpose  The Academy's purpose is to advance the periodontal and general health of the public and promote excellence in the practice of periodontics. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.

Leadership  The Academy is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of five officers and district trustees from seven geographical districts and the federal services. The officers are elected by the membership.

History  The AAP was founded in 1914 with 18 charter members under the name American Academy of Oral Prophylaxis and Periodontology.

Membership Applications  Applications are accepted throughout the year for four membership categories. Annual dues are for the calendar year January 1 to December 31. Payment of the application fee and annual dues must accompany the application. Applications received on or after October 31 are processed with a January 1 join date.
