Recertification Process

Periodically all Diplomates in Active status are required to submit a statement of compliance with continuing education requirements and other professional activities directed toward maintaining current knowledge and competence in periodontics.

During the year recertification is due, the Board will send the Diplomate a copy of the Recertification Form can't open this pdf page? download acrobat reader, which must be completed and returned to the Board office by December 31 of that year to verify that recertification requirements have been met.

Recertificaton Requirements

After January 1, 2008, new Diplomates will be required to meet recertification requirements every six (6) years by attaining BOTH of the following:

Diplomates who have a recertification date of 2006 or 2007 must fulfill the current requirement by attaining ONE of following and must recertify in 3 years::

Diplomates on the current three-year cycle who must recertify prior to January 1, 2011, will be required to attain BOTH of the following, after which they will begin the six-year cycle:

ABP Recertification Self-Study Examination

The ABP Recertification Self-Study Examination may be purchased online. Once at the Web site, click on “Purchase Today.” The cost of the examination is $90. After your payment has been processed, you will be provided with login credentials to access and take the examination. Diplomates receive a certificate with completion of the examination.

Continuing Education Activities

Record keeping and reporting of the accumulation of points remains the responsibility of the Diplomate. The Board does not require Diplomates to submit proof of attainment of points for any of the above activities.

15-Point Criteria for Continuing Education Credits

Activities of one-half (½) day or shorter will earn one-half (½) point; one (1) point may be counted for activities longer than a half-day, up to a full day. Points may be accumulated in the following ways:

1 pt. per day Teaching–a maximum of 7 pts. during a three-year period may be credited for teaching

*Scope of Periodontics: Periodontics is that specialty of dentistry which encompasses the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the supporting and surrounding tissues of the teeth or their substitutes and the maintenance of the health, function and esthetics of these structures.

30- and 60-Point Criteria for Continuing Education Credits

Recertification Form

At the time of recertification, Diplomates must complete the Recertification Form can't open this pdf page? download acrobat reader, verifying that they have maintained the qualifications for good standing, by responding to the following questions. The Board will mail this form to Diplomates when recertification is due, and the form must be completed and returned to the Board office. If a Diplomate answers Yes to any of these questions, a full explanation of the answer must be provided and returned with the statement of compliance. Further, if any answers change, the Diplomate must notify the Board and provide an explanation.

1. Have any disciplinary actions been initiated against you by a state licensing board or military tribunal? Yes No
2. Has your license to practice in any state or jurisdiction been denied, relinquished, limited, suspended, reprimanded, censured, or revoked? Yes No
3. Have you been suspended, sanctioned, or otherwise restricted from participating in any private, federal, or state health insurance program for reasons relating to the practice of dentistry? Yes No
4. Has your DEA (narcotics) registration certificate been relinquished, limited, suspended, revoked or challenged? Yes No
5. Have you been sanctioned, suspended, censured, or expelled from a professional dental or medical organization for reasons other than non-payment of dues? Yes No
6. Have you been convicted of, or pleaded nolo contendere to, any criminal conduct or misdemeanors other than minor traffic violations? Yes No
7. Have your hospital or institutional appointments or privileges been denied, reduced, limited, not renewed, suspended, diminished, revoked, or relinquished for reasons relating to the practice of dentistry? Yes No
