San Antonio Periodontist Installed as AAP President Elect

David Cochran is chair of the Department of Periodontics at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

CHICAGO–October 30, 2007—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) installed David L. Cochran, DDS, as president elect at the 93rd Annual Meeting in Washington, DC.

David CochranAn AAP member since 1982, Cochran has served on the Board of Trustees, as a member of the Organizing Committee for the AAP Predoctoral Periodontal Education Congress and the Task Force for Distance Learning, and has chaired the Committee on Research Science and Therapy, the Continuing Education Oversight Committee and the Task Force on Distance Learning Options.

In addition to his work with the Academy, he is also a member of the Academy of Osseointegration, International College of Dentists, American Society for Bone and Mineral Research, American College of Dentists and the Southwest Society of Periodontists.

“Dr. Cochran is an outstanding educator and has done great work on the Executive Committee. I am sure that he will continue to prepare the AAP and periodontal profession for the future as he takes on this new position,” said Preston D. Miller, Jr., DDS and 2006-2007 AAP president.

In addition to becoming the President Elect, Dr Cochran is also the recipient of the William J. Gies Award. This award is given in Memory of Arthur Hastings Merritt and is presented by the William J.Gies Foundation for the Advancement of Dentistry of the American Dental Education Association for outstanding contributions to the field of periodontology.

Cochran received his dental degree and his PhD in biochemistry from the Medical College of Virginia/VCU and his specialty training in periodontics from Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1981, 1982 and 1985 respectively.
