AAP Clarifies the Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Periodontal Diseases (11/14/06)
The Guidelines are intended to help dentists quickly identify those patients at greatest risk and therefore most appropriate for treatment by a periodontist. However, the Guidelines do not include treatment or referral mandates.

Guidelines for the Management of Patients with Periodontal Diseases Released Today (9/5/06)
The American Academy of Periodontology commissioned a task force to develop the Guidelines to encourage referring dentists and periodontists to work together to optimize the health of patients.
