Predoctoral Program Director Survey Highlights
This survey was commissioned to uncover the attitudes of program directors regarding the state of predoctoral periodontal education.
In January, the Academy sent a survey to 53
predoctoral periodontal program directors in
the United States; 87 percent of those
surveyed responded, helping set the agenda
for the Academy’s first-ever Predoctoral
Periodontal Education Congress.
Some of the findings from the survey include:
- The majority of respondents have greater
than 15 years of teaching experience.
- More than 80 percent enjoy teaching
because they like working with students
and seeing them grow; other respondents
are motivated by their appreciation for
knowledge, interaction with other disciplines,
and the stimulation and variety of
teaching outside of private practice.
- When asked to name the biggest
challenge in teaching periodontics, the
predoctoral periodontal directors cited
the following:
- Limited resources: faculty and
finances (38 percent)
- Time allotted for and importance of
periodontics in curriculum
(31 percent)
- Difficulty moving toward case-based
learning/comprehensive dentistry
(16 percent)
- Lack of patients/hands-on clinic time
(7 percent)
