Elibility requirements and submission guidelines for this award to assist third-year periodontal residents in launching their careers as full-time educators.

What is awarded?

Created to assist beginning periodontal educators in launching their career, one payment of $10,000 is awarded in the fourth quarter of the year after that AAP Annual Meeting. The award is not to be used to replace support that would have normally been provided by the recipient's institution. The award should be considered a supplement to any salary, stipend or research support.

Who is eligible?

Award candidates must be in their third year of a nonmilitary accredited periodontal post-doctoral training program in the United States, and intend to pursue a career in full-time periodontal teaching and research in the United States.

What are the qualifications?

A strong interest in periodontal education is the primary qualification. In addition, the selected candidates must demonstrate excellent character, integrity, a record of academic and personal achievements, and an aptitude for teaching and research.

How do candidates apply?

Application forms are available from Program Directors and Chairs, or may be accessed using the link below.

All application materials must be received by June 1. Please complete form online, save, and e-mail it as an attachment and then mail the following supporting documentation to the AAP Foundation:

  • Copy of completed application form
  • Transcript of grades from dental school and postgraduate work
  • Curriculum vitae
  • 750-word personal statement that addresses special qualities the applicant will bring to education, the applicant's philosophy of education, research interests, extracurricular and community activities, financial need, and career plans
  • Three letters of recommendation: one from their program director, one from another periodontal professional, and a personal letter of reference

What is the selection process?

The selection committee is made up of three periodontists who have an interest in periodontal education. Members of the committee are appointed by the Foundation president. The application deadline is June 1 and the Fellowship recipient is announced by August 15.
