AAP Foundation Awards First Educator Scholarships to Drs. Diaz And Mullins

The $50,000 AAP Educator Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students in U.S. periodontal training programs who intend to enter full-time teaching upon graduation.

CHICAGO—October 19, 2006—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation recently awarded its first American Academy of Periodontology Educator Scholarships to Patricia Diaz, B.D.S., B.ScDent., Ph.D., and Stephanie Mullins, D.D.S.

The $50,000 AAP Educator Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students in U.S. periodontal training programs who intend to enter full-time teaching at a U.S. periodontal program upon graduation. Dr. Diaz is in the Periodontology M.S. program in the Department of Periodontology, School of Dentistry, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Mullins is a resident in the Periodontal Program at the University of Missouri Kansas City, School of Dentistry, where she is pursuing a Masters of Oral Biology as well as her certificate in periodontology.

Dr. Diaz received her D.D.S. from the Institute of Health Sciences in Colombia, and her BSc.Dent. with First Class Honors from the Dental School of the University of Adelaide, Australia, where she also received her Ph.D. She took postdoctoral training at the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, Maryland.

Dr. Mullins received her D.D.S. from the University of Missouri Kansas City, School of Dentistry. Dr. Mullins was a full-time faculty member at the UMKC School of Dentistry 2003-2004 and received the “Outstanding Team III Faculty” award.

The AAP Educator Scholarships were created by a $1 million commitment from the American Academy of Periodontology and administered by the AAP Foundation.

The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is dedicated to improving the periodontal and general health of the public by increasing public and professional awareness of periodontal diseases; stimulating and supporting clinical research and the generation of new knowledge; and enhancing educational programs and opportunities in periodontology. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
