CHICAGO – October 14, 2002 – The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation recently named Robert DePoi, MSD, recipient of the 2002 Dr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence. DePoi, who received his MSD and Certificate in Periodontics from the Indiana University School of Dentistry, maintains a private practice in Victoria Australia.

The Kramer Scholar Award was established to honor the outstanding contributions of Dr. Gerald Kramer and his wife, Sylvia, to the periodontal profession. Students in their third year of an accredited periodontal residency are eligible to be nominated for the $10,000 award. Nominations are made by periodontal residency program directors. Critera for selection include academic achievement, community service and personal excellence.

Prior to attending Indiana University, DePoi graduated from the University of Melbourne Faculty of Dental Science, where he received his BDSc. He is a Fellow Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Restorative Dentistry (FRACDS), where he ranked first in his examination. While at Indiana University, Dr. DePoi was awarded the Dr. Henry M. Swenson Award for Clinical and Didactic Excellence in Graduate Periodontology 2001 and 2002. In addition, he served as a part-time faculty member in periodontics at the Indiana School of Dentistry from August 1999 to June 2002.

DePoi's attendance at the Award presentation was made possible, in part, by a travel grant from the periodontal program at Indiana University.
