AAP Foundation Names Russo Recipient of Kramer Scholar Award

Students in their third year of periodontal residency are eligible to be nominated for the $10,000 award.

CHICAGO, November 29, 2003 – The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation recently named Dr. Stephen Russo recipient of the 2003 Dr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence. Dr. Russo, who graduated Magna Cum Laude from Harvard School of Dental Medicine, recently completed his periodontal residency at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

During his residency, Dr. Russo also maintained a part-time private practice and volunteered as attending faculty at the SHAC clinic in Carrboro, NC. He has also worked with the Pitt County Health Center treating underserved children. A primary focus of Dr. Russo's research efforts at the University of North Carolina has been the potential effects of periodontal infection on systemic conditions.

The Kramer Scholar Award was established to honor the outstanding contributions of Dr. Gerald Kramer and his wife, Sylvia, to the periodontal profession. Students in their third year of an accredited periodontal residency are eligible to be nominated for the $10,000 award. Nominations are made by periodontal postgraduate program directors. Critera for selection include academic achievement, community service and personal excellence.
