AAP Foundation Names Dr. Doina Panaite Recipient
of Kramer Scholar Award

CHICAGO—October 19, 2006—The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) Foundation recently named Doina Panaite, D.D.S., M.S., recipient of the 2006 Dr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence.
Dr. Panaite was a student at the UCLA School of Dentistry, Postgraduate Periodontics Program at the time of her nomination and working concurrently on an M.S. in Oral Biology. She received her D.D.S. from the UCLA School of Dentistry, where she graduated summa cum laude. Dr. Panaite received the Mary Hooley Scholarship and the Julius and Eleanor Sue Foundation scholarship while a student at UCLA School of Dentistry. She was also a finalist for the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery. Dr. Panaite currently directs a “Youth Dentistry Awareness” program in which dental students and practicing dentists volunteer their services to underprivileged children in Romanian orphanages.
The Kramer Scholar Award was established to honor the outstanding contributions of Dr. Gerald Kramer and his wife, Sylvia, to the periodontal profession. Students in their third year of an accredited periodontal postdoctoral program are eligible to be nominated for the $10,000 award. Nominations are made by periodontal postgraduate program directors. Critera for selection include academic achievement, community service and personal excellence.
The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is dedicated to improving the periodontal and general health of the public by increasing public and professional awareness of periodontal diseases; stimulating and supporting clinical research and the generation of new knowledge; and enhancing educational programs and opportunities in periodontology. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
