CHICAGO, April 18, 2006–The AAP Foundation recently announced the selection of Dr. Daniel Engler-Hamm as the 2006 recipient of the $50,000 Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery. Dr. Engler-Hamm currently is in his third year of periodontal post-doctoral training at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine Department of Periodontology. The Lazzara Fellowship is a 12-month program. Dr. Engler-Hamm will conduct his research in the Tufts School of Dental Medicine.

The Lazzara Fellowship is named in honor of Dr. Richard J. Lazzara, one of the specialty’s leaders in implantology. It is sponsored by BIOMET 3i and provides a stipend for the selected Fellow and funds to offset costs incurred by the hosting institution.

The AAP Foundation Lazzara Fellowship was created to provide educational and clinical experiences that reflect the most current techniques in implant dentistry. The hosting institution provides the Fellow with clinical learning experiences in the surgical management of advanced implant cases, including implant site development and oral plastic surgery procedures aimed at restoration, as well as clinical research leading to the development of an implant-related research paper suitable for publication, and teaching experiences.

Being selected as a finalist in competition for the Lazzara award is a high honor. This year, in addition to Dr. Engler-Hamm, the final round of candidates included Dr. Catherine Badell from the Louisiana State University periodontal program and Dr. Doina Panaite from the UCLA periodontal program.

Students may apply for the Lazzara Fellowship during their third year of periodontal postdoctoral training. The application is made jointly by the student and the student’s periodontal program director.
