CHICAGO, April 5, 2007–Jacob Kobi Stern, D.M.D., was recently named recipient of the Richard J. Lazzara Fellowship in Advanced Implant Surgery. The $50,000, 12-month Fellowship is awarded by the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation and sponsored by BIOMET 3i. The award includes a stipend for the Fellow as well as funds to offset the hosting institution’s overhead and administrative costs.

Dr. Stern received his D.M.D. in 2002 and his M.Sc. in 2004 from the Hebrew University-Hadassah School of Dental Medicine, Jerusalem, Israel. He is currently in the Postdoctoral Periodontics Graduate Program at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine, where he is an undergraduate clinical instructor in the Department of Periodontics.

Dr. Stern was one of three finalists for the Fellowship. Amar Katranji, D.D.S., of the University of Michigan School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontics and Oral Medicine, and Bertina Yuen, D.M.D., Harvard School of Dental Medicine, were also finalists for the Lazzara Fellowship. All candidates must be in their third year of their periodontal post-doctoral training and are nominated by their program directors.

The AAP Foundation Lazzara Fellowship was created to provide educational and clinical experiences that reflect the most current techniques in implant dentistry. The hosting institution must provide the Fellow with clinical learning experiences in the surgical management of advanced implant cases, including implant site development and oral plastic surgery procedures aimed at restoration, clinical research leading to the development of an implant-related research paper suitable for publication and teaching experiences. The Fellowship is named in honor of Richard J. Lazzara, D.M.D., a co-founder of BIOMET 3i and an innovator in implantology.
