CHICAGO – October 14, 2002 – The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation has named Paulo M. Camargo, DDS, 2002 recipient of the Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship. The $30,000 fellowship is a career development award for outstanding academic periodontists. Dr. Camargo has been an assistant professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry periodontics section since 1996, where he is also associate director of the clinical research center. He also maintains a private practice in Los Angeles.

The Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship was created to encourage gifted periodontal clinicians who have a demonstrated facility for teaching, to pursue an academic career. Created out of an initiative by Bud Tarrson, former president and owner of the John O. Butler Company, and Linda Tarrson, the award is the largest individual privately funded fellowship in periodontology. Candidates must be either full-time or part-time faculty members at the instructor or assistant level and affiliated with a degree-granting institution for 10 years or less. They must have a stated career goal in periodontal education and research. Nominations for the fellowship are made by periodontal program directors. Evaluation is made on both academic and clinical strengths as well as the candidate's potential for a leadership role in teaching.

Dr. Camargo holds an MS in oral biology as well as a certificate in postgraduate periodontics from UCLA. He received his DDS from the University of Parana School of Dentistry, Brazil.

Dr. Camargo has received numerous teaching awards, including the Award for Excellence in the Teaching of Periodontics from the UCLA School of Dentistry class of 2000. He has lectured and published widely, and has also received funding for numerous research projects, including a recent NIH/NIDCR grant.

The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is dedicated to improving the periodontal health of the public by increasing public and professional awareness of periodontal diseases; stimulating and supporting clinical research and the generation of new knowledge; and enhancing educational programs and opportunities in periodontology. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
