CHICAGO, July 26, 2004 – The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation recently named Dr. Vanchit John as 2004 recipient of the Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship. The $30,000 fellowship is a career development award for outstanding academic periodontists.
Dr. John is on the faculty of the Indiana University School of Dentistry, where since 1999 he has served as Assistant Professor and Director of the Pre-Doctoral Program in the Department of Periodontics and Allied Dental Programs. He received the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching from the Indiana University School of Dentistry (IUSD) Alumni Association in 2003. In 2002,
Dr. John holds two dental degrees and two degrees in periodontics. After completing both degrees at the Madras Dental College in Madras, India, followed by a period of private practice, he returned to school at the Indiana University School of Dentistry for additional degrees in dentistry and periodontics. In 1998 he received his Doctor of Dental Surgery from IUSD.
The Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship was created to encourage gifted periodontal clinicians who have a demonstrated facility for teaching, to pursue an academic career. Candidates must be either full-time or part-time faculty members at the instructor or assistant level and affiliated with a degree-granting institution for 10 years or less. They must have a stated career goal in periodontal education and research. Nominations for the fellowship are made by periodontal program directors. Evaluation is made on both academic and clinical strengths as well as the candidate's potential for a leadership role in teaching.
The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is dedicated to improving the periodontal and general health of the public by increasing public and professional awareness of periodontal diseases; stimulating and supporting clinical research and the generation of new knowledge; and enhancing educational programs and opportunities in periodontology. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
