CHICAGO—October 1, 2006—The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation recently named Monish Bhola, D.D.S., M.S.D., recipient of the Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship. The $30,000 fellowship is a career development award for outstanding academic periodontists. Dr. Bhola is Program Director of Graduate Periodontics at the University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry, Department of Periodontology and Dental Hygiene.
Dr. Bhola was instrumental in the development of the periodontal program at University of Detroit Mercy, School of Dentistry, where he is also Co-Director of Implant Dentistry at the school and Chair of the Committee of Graduate Education as well. He also serves as clinical instructor for the undergraduate dental program. Dr. Bhola received his Master of Science in Dentistry and his Certification in Periodontics from Indiana University School of Dentistry. He served a post-doctoral fellowship in periodontics and implantology at Indiana University, and then obtained his D.D.S. from the University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry.
Dr. Bhola is a recipient of the Shofu Graduate Student Award, where his research presentation received first place. He also received the Henry M. Swenson Award for Excellence in Academic and Clinical Periodontics.
The Bud and Linda Tarrson Fellowship was created to encourage gifted periodontal clinicians who have a demonstrated facility for teaching, to pursue an academic career. Candidates must be either full-time or part-time faculty members at the instructor or assistant level and affiliated with a degree-granting institution for 10 years or fewer. They must have a stated career goal in periodontal education and research. Nominations for the fellowship are made by periodontal program directors. Evaluation is made on both academic and clinical strengths as well as the candidate’s potential for a leadership role in teaching.
The American Academy of Periodontology Foundation is dedicated to improving the periodontal and general health of the public by increasing public and professional awareness of periodontal diseases; stimulating and supporting clinical research and the generation of new knowledge; and enhancing educational programs and opportunities in periodontology. Periodontics is one of nine dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association.
