What is awarded?

The fellowship is a $36,000 award ($12,000 per year, for up to 3 years) for periodontists pursuing academic careers. The award is not intended to replace support that would normally have been provided by the recipient's institution.

Who is eligible?

Candidates for the Fellowship must be either a full-time faculty member at the instructor or assistant level or a part-time faculty member. The candidate must be affiliated for 10 years or less with a degree-granting institution, and their career goal must be teaching and research in periodontology. Only Active or Student members of the Academy are eligible. Applications will be accepted only from candidates at U.S. institutions.

How do candidates apply?

Applications will be sent to Deans and Program Directors in March. Nominations will be accepted until May 1 from a candidate's periodontal program director, who submits an application form. In addition, the candidate must meet all requirements of the application.

What is the selection process?

The Selection Committee is appointed by the AAP Foundation President and consists of members of the Tarrson family and other Academy members who are involved with the AAP Foundation. The Selection Committee will review applications and decide on three finalists by July 1. The selection is based on the quality of the individual and his or her work in the academic field, not financial need.

The top three candidates must attend the AAP Annual Meeting, where they will be interviewed immediately preceding the opening of the meeting.
