ABP1: AMERICAN BOARD REVIEW PART 1
8:00 - 11:00 am
Program Track: Practice Development and Management
Speakers: Everett B. Hancock, Bradley L. Phillips,
Michael P. Rethman
This course will assist in preparing for the ABP examination
by providing strategies for studying, utilizing key resources
and offering a plan to complete the written and oral
exams in the allotted two years. This program reflects all
of the current Board regulations, as well as the significant
changes in the examination and certification process.
An evidence-based overview of occlusion as related to
periodontal disease and therapy, and a focused
presentation of connective tissue and bone biology
related to regenerative surgical therapy are topics that
are historically part of the written and oral examinations,
and will be presented here.
Educational Objectives:
- Understand the ABP guidelines and process leading to Board certification.
- Develop a workable timetable and strategies to prepare for successfully completing the ABP examination using readily available resources.
- Review of selected topics with a literature base.
CBSS: CLINICAL AND BASIC SCIENCE
SYMPOSIUM SPONSORED BY DISTRICT 8
8:00 - 11:00 am
All Annual Meeting registrants are welcome to attend
the symposium.
HW1: HANDS-ON WORKSHOP: SINUS
ELEVATION
8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Program Track: Implants
Speakers: Stuart J. Froum, Stephen S. Wallace
Cost: $1,595 per person
Limited attendance workshop
Sinus augmentation surgery has become an invaluable
part of the practice of periodontics. It has been shown
to be both an effective means of creating bone volume
in the posterior maxilla for the placement of dental
implants, and through evidence-based reviews, the most
predictable augmentation procedure that is performed.
The goal of this course is to give participants the most
current knowledge on how to best perform sinus
elevation surgery, and how to avoid and treat surgical
complications. The didactic portion of the course will
utilize both evidence-based, decision-making concepts
to ready participants to make surgical decisions, and
further present the clinical experience of the presenters.
The unique hands-on program will allow participants to
utilize models to perform sinus augmentation procedures
with both rotary and piezoelectric techniques. It is the
goal of this workshop to give the participant the
opportunity to evaluate the different piezoelectric
devices currently on the market. A special feature of this hands on course will be the availability of piezoelectric devices from the five leading companies for participants to try and compare. This is the first time the opportunity to simultaneously try out the various devices before you buy has been possible.
Educational Objectives:
- Reveal the most predictable surgical techniques.
- Become prepared on how to deal with intraoperative complications.
- Be able to compare the new piezoelectric devices.

There are whole regimens of proven therapies to preserve
and maintain periodontally-involved teeth. At the same
time, the success of a carefully considered and placed
single tooth implant, restored with a crown, is almost a
certainty. Does it make sense to take out a compromised,
but maintainable tooth, and replace it with an implant
and crown? Perhaps we have jumped the gun in
embracing implants as the solution to a long-term
maintenance issue. Whether that is the case or not, how
should we decide? What level of treatment makes sense?
On what terms should we evaluate the appropriateness
of each type of “predictable” treatment? Financial
considerations? Complexity?
Educational Objectives:
- Recognize available techniques for the treatment of advanced periodontitis.
- Understand the treatment “decision tree” enabling appropriate choices.
- Compare the financial ramifications of each treatment approach.
Our thanks to Colgate; DENTSPLY Professional;
GlaxoSmithKline; Johnson & Johnson Healthcare Products
Division of McNeil-PPC, Inc.; Philips/Sonicare; Procter &
Gamble Professional Oral Health and Sunstar Americas, Inc.

SS1: SEDATION SESSION - ANXIETY
MANAGEMENT
8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Program Tracks: Associate Member, Periodontal
Medicine
Moderator: Robert L. Merin
Speaker: Kenneth L. Reed
A basic review of pharmacology of drugs used for sedation
will be presented. A discussion of agents appropriate as
enteral sedative agents will follow, leading into a review of
agents used in parenteral moderate sedation techniques.
Equally important, agents inappropriate for use in both
enteral and parenteral moderate sedation will be outlined,
with rationale discussed for each agent. Finally, emphasis
this year will be on a thorough review of local anesthesia
agents and techniques. Since profound local anesthesia is an
absolute necessity for the success of minimal and moderate
sedation techniques, this important discussion will
highlight the day.
Educational Objectives:
- List and discuss the most appropriate oral sedative agent for a two-hour case.
- Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of adding an opioid to a parenteral sedation regimen.
- Describe more than one method of anesthetizing the inferior alveolar nerve.
EV3: SPEAK LIKE A LEADER
8:00 am - 5:00 pm
Program Tracks: Associate Member, Practice
Development and Management
Moderator: George V. Duello
Speaker: Paul A. Homoly
Cost: $295 per person
Limited attendance event
Leaders move, look, sound and speak in distinctive ways
that gain attention and attract people and opportunities.
The language of leadership carries an energy and intensity
that clearly distinguishes itself from that which is used
typically in a clinic or business.
Educational Objectives:
- Learn to speak with clarity and confidence, and make your presentations more complete and memorable.
- Create personal appeal to become likeable and approachable; create a speaking image that connects with people and holds their interest.
- Identify communication techniques that grow relationships with patients, referring doctors, colleagues and team members.
EV4: COMPREHENSIVE PERIODONTAL
INSURANCE WORKSHOP 1: REPORTING
PERIODONTAL PROCEDURES TO THIRD
PARTIES
10:00 am - 4:00 pm
Speaker: Pam Throw, Academy Staff
Cost: $300 per person
Limited attendance workshop
This workshop, Reporting Periodontal Procedures to
Third Parties, is recommended for a first-time staff
person, office manager, or any person who works in a
periodontal practice and needs a baseline understanding
of insurance claim submissions and ADA CDT-2007
procedure codes. The session includes a copy of
Reporting Periodontal Procedures to Third Parties: The
AAP’s Comprehensive Insurance Workbook and lunch.
Careful and accurate management of insurance claims is
one of the most important services periodontal practices
can offer patients today. Timely submission, precision
coding, and excellent communication with patients and
third parties can impact the success of your practice.
Educational Objectives:
- Differentiate between types of dental insurance, which will improve understanding of and communication about patient dental insurance plans.
- Properly apply American Dental Association CDT-2007 codes for more accurate coding submissions.
- Understand the basic structure of AMA codes and recognize appropriate indications for submitting to medical insurance.
DISTRICT 8 SECTION MEETINGS
11:00 am - 12:00 noon
HW2: HANDS-ON WORKSHOP: IMPLANT
PROVISIONALIZATION TO OPTIMIZE THE
ESTHETIC OUTCOME
11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Program Tracks: Associate Member, Implants,
Interdisciplinary Therapy
Speaker: E. Todd Scheyer
Cost: $825 per person
Limited attendance workshop
Advances in dental implant design and tissue
regeneration have allowed for constantly evolving
implant-loading protocols with high levels of clinical
success. Advances in prosthetic components including
CAD-CAM milling of abutments and prefabricated
zirconium abutments have improved esthetic outcomes
and simplified the restorative process for implant
dentistry. The ability to utilize a well-constructed
emergence profile provisional restoration is essential to
optimize soft tissue contours prior to constructing the
ideal final abutment and restoration. This course will be
supported by an ongoing clinical trial using a biologicallymodified
implant surface that is subjected to early
provisional loading under a well-defined protocol for
functional and esthetic success. A workshop will follow to
provide attendees the opportunity to experience portions
of the discussed protocol for single tooth implant
replacement that can be utilized in private practice.
Educational Objectives:
- Gain an understanding of emerging technology in implant dentistry.
- Expand one’s experience with provisionalization that can easily be implemented into clinical practice.
