Distinguished Service: Dr. John Kobs
The Distinguished Service Award is conferred to those who have spent more than 20 years of their membership in service to the Academy and the specialty. Michigan periodontist Dr. John Kobs is the 2017 Distinguished Service honoree.
Dr. Kobs’ work with the AAP began in 1987 as the vice chairman of the New Practitioner Committee, continuing with participation on the Public and Professional Communications Committee, District IV Nomination Committee, Executive Director Review Committee, Nominating Committee, and Finance Committee. For three consecutive years, he was the AAP’s representative at the American Dental Association’s Leadership Conference. He served two stints as the liaison to the Task Force on Dental Hygiene Education in 2000 and 2004, and in 2003, he became the chairman of the Task Force to Review the Annual Meeting. In 1998, he began the first of two three-year terms on the Board of Trustees, culminating in service on the Executive Committee in 2004.
In 2013, Dr. Kobs served as the president of the AAP Foundation after many years of contribution to its committees and Board of Directors.
“Dr. Kobs has been, and continues to be, a dedicated friend of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation (AAPF). His service as committee member, director, and president of the Foundation has demonstrated his commitment to the specialty, and he is also a generous benefactor,” says Dana Camacho, the AAPF’s director of development. “Dr. Kobs’ willingness to work hard, his kindness, and his sense of humor have helped the AAP Foundation succeed in carrying out its mission for the past two decades.”
Dr. Kobs’ work with the AAP coincides with many years of involvement with the Midwest Society of Periodontology, eventually rising through the ranks to become its president in 1996. A graduate of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, Dr. Kobs has maintained a private practice in Holland, Mich., since 1977.
