AAP Membership Categories, Privileges, and Dues

The AAP offers five membership categories for new members and three transfer categories for long-term members, based on professional qualifications, practice status, and residency.

Categories for New Members

If you are already a member and are eligible to transfer to Active, Associate, Student, International status, submit a Transfer Application.

Active Member

2017 Dues $980 ($200 appplication fee)
Membership Application

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Licensed to practice dentistry in the U.S. and member of the American Dental Association (ADA).
  • Qualified as a specialist in periodontics according to ADA requirement and limits practice to periodontics.
  • Qualified both as a periodontist and one or more other ADA recognized specialties and limits practice to these specialties.
  • Has successfully completed periodontal training in an accredited periodontal program in the United States.
  • Is primarily a researcher or educator in periodontics who limits practice to periodontics.
  • Active members who teach periodontics full-time as defined by their institution receive a 50% dues reduction.
  • Required to attend Annual Meeting every 3 years.

Associate Member

2017 Dues $980 ($150 application fee)
Associate Membership Application

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Any dentist in U.S. or its territories who is not eligible for Active membership and who is an ADA member.
  • Required to attend Annual Meeting every 5 years.

Student Member

2017 Dues $127 (no application fee)
Student Membership Application

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Any dentist continuously enrolled in a periodontal residency program accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation.
  • No Annual Meeting requirement.

  • Receive Academy mailings
  • Perio.org member access

 

International Member

2017 Dues $490 (50% of Active Dues, $50 application fee)
International Membership Application

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Any dentist residing outside the United States and its territories who is a member of a national dental association.
  • No Annual Meeting requirement.

  • Receive Academy mailings
  • Perio.org member access
  • Eligible for FaP (Find a Periodontist)

International Student Member

2017 Dues $127 (no application fee)
International Student Membership Application

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Any dentist continuously enrolled in an advance periodontal program as defined by their country of residence. Must provide letter verifying enrollment.
  • No Annual Meeting requirement.

Transfer Categories for Long-Term Members

Life Active Member

2017 Dues $735 (75% of Active Dues)

Eligibility/Requirements

Any Active member who:

  • Is 65 years or older and has been an Active member for 25 or more consecutive years.
  • Life (Voting) members as of 9/26/02 have been transferred to this category; they are exempt from dues and purchase a subscription to the Journal of Periodontology separately.
  • Life Active members who teach periodontics full-time as defined by their institution receive a 50% dues reduction based on Active member pricing.
  • No Annual Meeting requirement.

Retired Member

2017 Dues $91

Eligibility/Requirements

  • Any person who has been a dues paying member of the Academy for ten years or who is disabled, shall be eligible to be a Retired member upon complete retirement from the practice of dentistry.
  • No Annual Meeting requirement.
