Understanding factors beyond compensation when determining your best fit practice opportunities will be discussed. The closer the practice owners and leadership align with our goals, values and vision, the greater the chance of a successful fit.

Once a first-year associate joins a practice, a communication gap often exists regarding the expectations for doctor leadership within the practice and the team. The associate doctor often takes a passive stance concerned about stepping on ownership’s toes. Yet, we have an important role in leading a clinical team, and sometimes the team at large. We will explore the conversation a first-year doctor might have with their employer regarding leadership expectations and responsibilities. We will also cover how an associate can effectively take initiative to influence the team for peak performance and results. Dentistry is a team sport, and high performing practices know that periodontists can’t do it alone.

Mitchell J. Bloom, DMD, J.D.
Legal Considerations for Periodontists

Dr. Bloom is a board-certified periodontist and an attorney admitted to the bar to practice law in New York and New Jersey. He attended college and dental school at Rutgers University and completed his periodontal specialty training at the University of Connecticut followed by the Fellowship in Implant Dentistry Program at New York University, and most recently, received his law degree from the City University of New York School of Law.

He is in private practice in New York City, limited to periodontics and implant surgery and is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Ashman Department of Periodontology and Implant Dentistry at New York University. Dr. Bloom has long been involved with organized dentistry and served as a trustee at the AAP for seven years, was a past president of the Northeastern Society of Periodontists and is now an examiner for the American Board of Periodontology.

He has gathered his collective experiences from the clinical and business aspects of private practice, teaching, administration, and service to the specialty, and put them to use in the practice of law helping other dental professionals.

Natalie A. Frost, DDS, MS
Perio/Life Balance

Dr. Frost obtained her Bachelor of Science degree from Rockhurst University graduating with honors and summa cum laude. She then earned a DDS degree at Creighton University School of Dentistry graduating summa cum laude and ranked #1 in her class.

Natalie completed her periodontics residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center-San Antonio, where she earned a Master of Science Degree and Certificate in Periodontics. Her master’s thesis was: “Periodontal Biotype: Gingival Thickness As It Relates to Probe Visibility and Buccal Plate Thickness.”

She is a member of the American Dental Association, Nebraska Dental Association, Omaha District Dental Society, American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, Omicron Kappa Upsilon-National Dental Honor Society, Nebraska Society of Periodontology, Southwest Society of Periodontists and the American Academy of Periodontology. In 2014, Dr. Frost became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology.

Dr. Frost has served on the Board of Directors and as President for both the Omaha District Dental Society and Southwest Society of Periodontists. She has also served as President for the Nebraska Society of Periodontology. Dr. Frost was Chair for the Graduate Prichard Research Competition of the Southwest Society of Periodontists. She has held an Adjunct Clinical Faculty position at Creighton University School of Dentistry and still volunteers as Adjunct Clinical Faculty at the University of Nebraska College of Dentistry. She is currently a District 5 Trustee for the American Academy of Periodontology.

She has received numerous awards and distinctions including the International College of Dentists Leadership Award, Quintessence Award-Recognition for Academic Achievement, Pat Allen Scholarship & Training for Minimally Invasive Soft Tissue Grafting for Teeth and Implants. She was also selected as one of three finalists in the nation for the prestigious American Academy of Periodontology Foundation-Dr. and Mrs. Gerald M. Kramer Scholar Award for Excellence.

Mia L. Geisinger, DDS, MS

Mia L. Geisinger, DDS, MS, is a Professor, Director of Advanced Education in Periodontology, and Chair of the Department of Periodontology in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Geisinger received her BS in Biology from Duke University, her DDS from Columbia University School of Dental Medicine, and her MS and Certificate in Periodontology and Implantology from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

Dr. Geisinger is a Diplomate in the American Board of Periodontology and a Fellow in the International Team for Implantology, the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. She has served as the President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, as the Chair of the American Dental Association’s Council on Scientific Affairs, as a member of the Board of Directors of the American Dental Association Science and Research Institute, and on multiple national and regional organized dentistry committees. She currently serves as the Immediate Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology and on numerous AAP and ADA committees and task forces.

She has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications and serves on the editorial board of several journals. Her research interests include periodontal and systemic disease interaction, implant dentistry in the periodontally compromised dentition, and novel treatment strategies for oral soft and hard tissue regeneration. She lectures nationally and internationally on topics in periodontology and oral healthcare.

Yusuke Hamada, DDS, MSD, PhD

Dr. Yusuke Hamada is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Periodontics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, Dental School. Dr. Hamada is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology (ABP), currently serves as an Oral Board Examiner and Oral Examination Committee member for the ABP. He is a Past President of the Indiana Society of Periodontics and the Midwest Society of Periodontology. He is also a fellow with the International Team for Implantology (ITI).

Dr. Yusuke Hamada graduated from Kyushu Dental University and obtained his DDS in 2006. He completed his periodontal program at Indiana University School of Dentistry and received an MSD and a certificate in Periodontics in 2015.

He has been involved in didactic and clinical teaching at both pre-doctoral and graduate levels. He received the AAP Foundation Nevins Teaching and Clinical Research Fellowship in 2019 and the Inaugural Excellence in Peer Review in Clinical Advances in Periodontics in 2024. He limits his patient care to periodontics and implant dentistry. He enjoys teaching and conducting basic and clinical research focused on hard- and soft-tissue regenerative procedures and has published 50 peer-reviewed articles and textbook chapters. He also lectures both nationally and internationally.

Aly Kennedy, DDS, MS
ABP: How to Successfully Become Board Certified/The Advantages of Being ABP Certified

Dr. Aly (Ricker) Kennedy is a board-certified periodontist in private practice in East Texas. She is active in organized dentistry at the local, regional, and national levels and is a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Board of Periodontology, the Texas Society of Periodontists, and the Southwest Society of Periodontists. She has also held leadership roles in several professional and community organizations.

Originally from Indianapolis, Indiana, Dr. Kennedy graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington before earning her DDS from the Indiana University School of Dentistry. During dental school, she received the Dr. David Whiston Leadership Award from the ADA Foundation and was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society.

Dr. Kennedy completed her postgraduate training in periodontics at Texas A&M University College of Dentistry in Dallas, where she earned both her certificate in periodontics and a Master of Science degree in Oral Biology. Her master’s thesis focused on oral lichen planus, and she served as chief resident during her final year of training.

Dr. Kennedy became a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology in 2023 and was the 2023 recipient of the Leslie M. Salkin Award, presented annually to the candidate who earns the highest score on the American Board of Periodontology oral examination. She strongly believes that board certification strengthens clinical excellence, reinforces lifelong learning, and demonstrates a commitment to providing the highest standard of care to patients and the profession.

Brett Kessler, DDS
From Rock Bottom to Significance/Five Dimensions of Wellness

Dr. Brett H. Kessler is a nationally recognized leader in dentistry, healthcare policy, and professional wellness. As the recent Past President of the American Dental Association (2024-2025), he led the nation’s largest dental organization and its 163,000 members through unprecedented challenges in healthcare delivery, policy reform, and professional wellbeing.

Dr. Kessler first testified before Congress in 2007 on behalf of the ADA regarding the ravages of methamphetamines on oral health and has testified before Congress multiple times since. He has also testified before several regulatory agencies including the White House in 2025, advocating for the integration of oral health into primary care and expanded access to dental services.

During his ADA leadership, Dr. Kessler served from the 14th District as its representative to the ADA’s Board of Trustees, where he chaired the ADA’s Science and Research Institute, the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, and the Audit Committee. He is Past President of the Colorado Dental Association and currently serves as Chairman of Colorado’s Dental Well-Being Committee and as a consultant to the ADA, having served for several years on the Dental Well-Being Advisory Committee and the Council on Dental Benefits.
Practicing esthetic, functional, and reconstructive dentistry since 1995, Dr. Kessler completed his General Practice Residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital from 1995-1997. He then practiced in Michigan from 1997-1999 before moving to Denver, Colorado in 2000 where he has practiced since. He has been recognized by his peers as a “Top Dentist” by 5280 Magazine every year since the award’s inception in 2005. In 2015, the Denver Post featured him with its inaugural “Strength in Health” award as the only dentist in Colorado to receive this distinction. He has been published in multiple national and local periodicals on cosmetic dentistry and wellbeing issues.

Dr. Kessler is a Fellow in the American College of Dentists, International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Illinois Chicago School of Dental Medicine and completed a General Practice Residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa. He served as a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Michigan while in private practice there from 1997-1999, then moved to Colorado in 2000 where he has practiced since. He taught occlusion and morphology at the University of Colorado School of Dental Medicine from 2003-2011.

An accomplished endurance athlete, Dr. Kessler keeps in shape by both coaching and participating in various endurance races across the United States, including two finishes at the Ironman World Championships in Kona, Hawaii (2018, 2019). His athletic pursuits inform his approach to leadership, emphasizing mental resilience, physical wellness, and purpose-driven performance.

Dr. Kessler speaks internationally to various organizations and dental societies with a focus on wellbeing and leadership concepts. His presentations blend vulnerability and authenticity with evidence-based strategies, leaving audiences inspired and equipped with practical tools for immediate implementation. He and his wife Gina, an orthodontist, have four children: Abbey, Max, Sydney, and Riley.

Wes Lyon, CPA, CFP
Financial Responsibility and Debt Management

Wes is the President & CEO of McGill and Lyon Dental Advisors, co-editor of The McGill & Lyon Dental Advisory, and a Tax, Business, and Financial Planning Advisor. A dynamic speaker known for blending humor with insight, he helps dentists reduce taxes, increase profits, and achieve financial independence.

Wes began his career in public accounting before transitioning into financial planning for small business owners. After joining John K. McGill and Company, he rose to Partner and, in 2022, purchased the consulting business to form McGill & Lyon Dental Advisors.
A proud Virginia Tech Hokie, Wes holds dual degrees in Finance and Accounting and is both a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Financial Planner (CFP®).

Outside of work, Wes enjoys life with his wife, Becca, their daughter, Madelyn, and their two golden retrievers, Betsy and Molly. On warm weekends, you’ll find Wes out on the golf course, boating on the lake, or fixing up whatever car Becca will let him keep in the garage.

Katie Martin, DMD, MS, MPH

Kate Martin, DMD, MS, MPH, practices full-time in a private practice office in Phoenix Arizona. She also serves as adjunct faculty in the AEGD program at A. T. Still University where she works with residents several days a month. Dr. Martin earned her BS in psychology and her BHS in physiology, along with her MS in physiological sciences from the University of Arizona. She earned her DMD and MPH from the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health (ASDOH) and her certificate in periodontology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Dr. Martin is a Diplomate of the American Board of Periodontology. She also serves on the AAP Resident Retreat Workgroup. Dr. Martin is currently serving as an active member on the Arizona State Board of Dental Examiners Investigative Committee and lectures for the Arizona Academy of General Dentistry.

Cassandra McKenzie, MA, DDS, MS
Rooted in Success: Marketing for Early Career Periodontists

Dr. Cassandra McKenzie’s path in periodontics began early, growing up in her father’s dental practice in rural Kansas. That formative experience shaped not only her clinical interests but also her appreciation for the role dentistry plays in community health and patient trust.

She earned her DDS from the University of Illinois at Chicago and was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon. She then completed her Certificate in Periodontics and Master’s in Orofacial and Cranial sciences at the University of Missouri–Kansas City, where she is now based. Her private practice Periodontal Care helps patients at five locations and holds >20% of the periodontal market share in the KC metro. She is Board Certified in Periodontology and Implant Surgery.

Dr. McKenzie is deeply involved in advancing the specialty. She serves as Vice President of the Midwest Society of Periodontology, is a LEAD alumna, and contributes actively within the American Academy of Periodontology. She served as an expert participant for the Best Evidence Consensus on Prevention of Peri-Implant Diseases, and her research on Wire Syndrome has been published in the International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry.

Prior to dental school, Dr. McKenzie taught inner-city middle school science as part of Teach For America where she simultaneously earned her Master of Arts in Teaching from Johns Hopkins. She continues to lecture locally and nationwide, leads two study clubs, and acts as periodontal curriculum director for the new Swope Health AEGD Residency Program which focuses on public health.

Outside of the office, Dr. McKenzie cherishes time with her daughters, Millie and Alice. She also enjoys embroidery and has a unique fondness for collecting dinosaur teeth and “pterable” jokes.

Angela Palaiologou-Gallis, DDS, MS

Dr. Angela Palaiologou-Gallis is a Professor and Graduate Program Director at UT Health San Antonio. She earned her Certificate in Periodontics and Master of Science degree in 2000 from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. Following seven years in private practice, she began her academic career in 2007. From 2009 to 2018, she served as Postgraduate Program Director in the Department of Periodontics at Louisiana State University School of Dentistry.

A Diplomate, Past President and current Director of Examinations of the American Board of Periodontology, Dr. Palaiologou is also a board member of the Southwest Society of Periodontists. She actively participates in professional organizations including the IADR/AADR, ADA, SADDS, and TDA. Within the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), she has held numerous leadership roles, serving on key committees such as the In-Service Exam Committee, Education Committee and the Match and the Saving Teeth Task Forces. She has also served in the 2022 Best Evidence Consensus on Biologics as well as the 2026 Consensus on Peri-implant diseases.

Her dedication to education and mentorship has been recognized with the 2020 AAP Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics Award. She chaired the AAP Postdoctoral Directors Organization from 2017 to 2019 and has served as a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation since 2015 and a member of the CODA review committee from 2021-2025. Additionally, she is a 2014 fellow of the ADEA Leadership Institute. Dr. Palaiologou has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.

Leena Palomo, DDS, MSD
ABP: How to Successfully Become Board Certified/The Advantages of Being ABP Certified

Dr. Palomo is a tenured professor at New York University and maintains a private practice in Ohio. She has secondary appointments in the Schools of Medicine and Engineering at Case Western Reserve in Ohio where she earned her bachelor’s, DDS, and Master of Science in Dentistry with Certificate in Periodontology. In between she earned her GPR at St. Elizabeth’s Health Center (level I trauma center in Youngstown, Ohio).

Dr. Palomo is President of the American Board of Periodontology. She brings experience in educational institutions, having served as director of predoctoral and advanced education programs and department chair, and her service to American Academy of Periodontology committees.

Her area of research focuses on oral health related quality of life in late life women. She enjoys time with her family and is “all sports all the time”.

Chris R. Richardson, DMD, MS

Chris R. Richardson, DMD, MS has served the Richmond, VA community for over 28 years in private practice, teaching and volunteering. He is an adjunct clinical professor in the Graduate Periodontics Clinic at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry and received the 2018 AAP Educator Award at VCU. Dr. Richardson is a Board Certified Periodontist by the American Board of Periodontology and has served in numerous leadership roles in his local, state, regional and national organizations. He is a Past President of the Richmond Dental Society and the Southern Academy of Periodontology. He currently serves as the President of the American Academy of Periodontology Foundation, is a Past President of the American Academy of Periodontology and also serves as an Examiner for the ABP. Dr. Richardson maintains an active membership in the American Academy of Periodontology, the American Dental Association, the Virginia Dental Association, and Richmond Dental Society. He is a former AAP Kramer Award recipient, a Fellow of the Virginia Dental Association, the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists. He received the 2017 AAP Clinical Research Award, the 2017 AAP Special Citation and is a recipient of the Harry Lyons Award from the Richmond Dental Society.

He enjoys his volunteer work, playing golf, has two wonderful children (with wonderful spouses) and an amazing wife.

Following completion of his dental degree at UCONN, and periodontal training at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Dr. Toback began private practice in southeastern Connecticut in 1998. Developing a large multi-location periodontal practice over twenty years, Dr. Toback developed a passion for the business of dentistry, leadership, marketing, and organizational development. He established High Performance Perio Practice Mentoring (HP3) in 2010 and coached periodontists throughout the US in building their own pathway to practice ownership success.

In 2018, with a vision of creating a collaborative model for the future, Dr. Toback founded Resolute Dental Partners. Presently with 7 locations (3 perio / 4 restorative), 15 dentists, and over 100 team members, Resolute has a vision of creating a movement that will shape the future of dentistry in their local community. With a focus on culture, combined with recruitment of top young talent, Resolute has tapped into the collaborative interdisciplinary energy of its team to experience exceptional growth in the early years of operations.
