Dr. Sook-Bin Woo is Professor at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, consultant oral and maxillofacial pathologist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital and attending oral medicine specialist at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Dana Farber Cancer Institute. She is co-director of the Center for Oral Pathology at StrataDx Inc. in Lexington, Massachusetts. She received her oral pathology training in Indiana University and Harvard University and her head and neck pathology training at Long Island Jewish Medical Center, New York. She is board-certified in both oral and maxillofacial pathology and oral medicine and is active in training residents and graduate students in both specialties. She received the Distinguished Senior Faculty Award from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 2012. She is a sought-after speaker at national and international venues and has published numerous papers including a textbook on Oral Pathology, the third edition of which will be published in 2023.

Dr. David M. Kim received his dental degree (DDS) from the University of Maryland Dental School and completed his periodontology training and Doctor of Medical Science (DMSc) in oral biology from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Currently, as an Associate Professor at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine, he is also the Director of the Postgraduate Program in Periodontology and Continuing Education at the Harvard School of Dental Medicine. Dr. Kim is a past recipient of both Distinguished Junior and Senior Faculty awards from Harvard. In addition, he received Balint Orban Research Award, Award for Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in Periodontics, Teaching Fellowship, and clinical research award from the American Academy of Periodontology. Dr. Kim’s clinical and research interests have been in the use of innovative concepts, technologies, and biomaterials to enhance intraoral soft and hard tissue formation, especially by incorporating the tissue engineering concept to repair and regenerate soft and hard tissue volume for patients requiring dental implants to replace missing teeth. He has published 123 manuscripts and 30 book chapters. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Periodontology and maintains a clinical practice at the Massachusetts General Hospital where he received the 2022 Patient Experience Award.

Is Something in the Air? Infection Prevention and Control in the Era of COVID-19

With the rapid pandemic incited by SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19, there has been a renewed interest in aerosols in the dental office. Dental procedures that employ handpieces, lasers, electrosurgery units, ultrasonic scalers, air polishers, prophy angles, hand instruments, or air/water syringes can create bioaerosols and spatter. Inhalation of airborne particles and aerosols produced during dental procedures may cause adverse respiratory health effects and bidirectional disease transmission.

This presentation will review current understanding regarding the SARS-CoV-2 virus, “invisible risks” within operatories, up-to-date infection control recommendations, and emerging evidence for ongoing infection control when delivering dental care.

Surgical Crown Lengthening Exposed
