American Academy of Periodontology Names New Executive Director
Ten-year Academy veteran Erin O’Donnell Dotzler Assumes New Role
Chicago - October 18, 2016 — The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP), the professional membership organization representing nearly 8,000 periodontists worldwide, recently announced that veteran staff member Erin O’Donnell Dotzler has assumed the role of Executive Director. Ms. O’Donnell Dotzler was selected after an extensive national search facilitated by executive search firm Kittleman & Associates, LLC.
Ms. O’Donnell Dotzler began her tenure at the AAP in 2006 as the Director of Public, Practice, and Scientific Affairs. In this capacity, she spearheaded the AAP’s scientific agenda, including coordinating the groundbreaking 2008 Workshop on Inflammation and the 2014 Workshop on Regeneration. Additionally, she implemented public and professional outreach programs and cultivated relationships with health care agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In 2014, Ms. O’Donnell Dotzler was elevated to Associate Executive Director of Education, Scientific Affairs, Policy, and Meetings. As Associate Executive Director, she fostered positive working relationships with corporate partners, expanded the AAP’s continuing education offerings, and strengthened organizational ties with the international periodontal community.
In her new position, Ms. O’Donnell Dotzler will report to the AAP Board of Trustees while overseeing the Academy’s operations and guiding a staff of more than 40 full-time employees. She will work in tandem with the Board to enhance and implement the organization’s strategic goals.
“In her over ten years at the AAP, Erin has consistently demonstrated tremendous leadership, innovation, and dedication. Her appointment to Executive Director is indicative of the respect she has earned not only of the Academy officers, trustees, and members, but also of the Academy’s high-functioning staff,” said AAP President Dr. Terrence J. Griffin. “On behalf of the AAP Board of Trustees, we are thrilled she will be taking the helm and know she will continue to serve as a trusted and effective leader.”
“It is an honor to have been selected as Executive Director of the organization I have called home for the past ten years,” said Ms. O’Donnell Dotzler. “I am fortunate to have the opportunity to continue to work with my valued colleagues and help guide the Academy towards its next chapter. The AAP is a world-class professional organization, and I am looking forward to contributing to its ongoing success.”
Ms. O’Donnell Dotzler holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Asian Studies from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., and a Master’s degree in Public Policy from Harvard University. Before joining the AAP, she served in the Healthcare Consulting practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers and as Chief Operating Officer for the Health Care Compliance Association.
