New Study Highlights Link Between Gum Health and Systemic Inflammation in Patients with Hypertension

CHICAGO – July 11, 2024- A new research study published in the American Academy of Periodontology’s (AAP) scientific journal, the Journal of Periodontology, sheds light on the connection between gum health and systemic inflammation in individuals with hypertension (high blood pressure).

In the cross-sectional study, 151 participants with hypertension were divided into groups based on their gum and implant health status. More than 50% of participants had periodontitis (an advanced form of gingivitis) and peri-implantitis (gum disease associated with dental implants). Researchers measured C-reactive protein (CRP) levels as an indicator of inflammation in participants.

Participants with periodontitis alone showed statistically significant higher CRP levels compared to healthy controls. Additionally, those with both periodontitis and peri-implantitis exhibited even higher CRP levels, indicating heightened systemic inflammation. These associations persisted even after adjusting for factors such as age, sex, smoking, and body weight.

The study suggests that peri-implant diseases are associated with systemic inflammation. Addressing gum and implant health could be pivotal in managing inflammation, which is crucial for individuals with conditions such as hypertension. The study also suggests that the nature of the association should be investigated further.

AAP President Dr. Stephen Meraw adds, “With each new study, we paint a more detailed picture of the link between gum disease and other ailments. That is why we stress to our patients as much as we can that they should be taking their oral health seriously. The goal isn’t to scare anyone. Rather, it’s our duty as periodontists to educate the public in an effort to prevent periodontitis and peri-implantitis from leading to more life-threatening illnesses.”

This study was conducted by Drs. Marco Orlandi, Nicola Pranno, Vipul Patel, Piero Papi, Bianca Di Murro, Giorgio Pompa, Antonella Polimeni, Claudio Letizia, Jeanie Suvan, and Francesco D’Aiuto.
